Highlands: The town of Highlands was founded by two men in 1875. These two men, according to legend, took a map in hand and drew a line from New York to New Orleans, then drew a line from Chicago to Savannah, Georgia. Where these two lines intersect was to be a great new city with loads of commerce and great trading. This now the town of Highlands, North Carolina.
What came out of this is now a summer town high in in the North Carolina Southern Appalachian Mountains at an elevation of 4,000 plus feet. The town was founded by pioneers from all over the country, tradesman from the north, Scotch-Irish laborers and craftsmen from all over the south. According to the 2010 U.S. Census the year round population stands at 924 and swells to 10 to 15,000 during the season from spring to fall.
Today the town is known for it’s cultural center for well known artist, musicians, actors, authors, photographers, scholars and more who have all enjoyed the natural settings of the beautiful mountains. The town today is know for its arts, culinary, holiday events and romantic events. Highlands is known for its many weddings that held in the area each year.
Highlands and Cashiers are places you should visit at least once. I am sure you will make a habit of coming back many times.
